APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday December 31, 2004 (MJD 53371) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Howard Brewington, Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake and Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds, clouds, more clouds, and moon. We collected some science photons but declared no plates done. And, there were no shake items possible because of poor weather conditions. We had many windscreen touches in altitude during the night; and sometimes, the touches occured while the scope was at stow, i.e., 121,30,00. Could it be a bad sensor? As last night, we are getting errors to_large_to_correct at the 90-degree alt fiducial. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- DA checkout - a strange thing happened tonight - when a bias drift ended, all DA displays showed frame #60 but one, which showed #59 (the display for dewar 1). Also watcher archiver position showed that everything had stopped on frame number 60, but id1, which has stopped on frame 59. Next short drift got all ids numbers 14, but astrometric dispalys showed 15, ecpect one which showed frame #14. From another sop session Steph was able to get bias without any problems. So Jurek exit his sop session and restarted it again - no problems after that. Spectrographs are in focus. Night: ---------- 12:25Z We opened under mostly cloudy skies. We wanted to test the spectrographs since Jurek had a spectro (sop session) problem during the afternoon checkout; see above. 01:00Z Cart 02, plate 2042 (segue104). An Fk5 was used to find the field. We did a preCal, 600-sec exposure, postCal, and had no problems with our SOP tests except for clouds. So, we moved the scope to its stow position, attached the spectro LN2, and waited. 04:30Z Cart 02, plate 2042 (segue104). Sky became somewhat cloudless, and we tried to get one exposure before this plate expired for the night. An Fk5 star was used to find the field again. One 1200-sec exposure was completed. 05:14Z Cart 03, plate 2069 (seguefaint105). Guide stars on goToField; our pointing looks good. Two exposures (1200 and 1500-sec) were completed, but plate was not declared done (see below). MJD S/N^2 53371 9.5 53359 34.8 ------------------- 44.3 Total 06:31Z Cart 06, plate 2085 (chunk99). Guide stars on goToField. We completed two exposures (900 and 600-sec) but captured no useful data because of the moon and thin clouds. Of the remaining plates for tonight, 2085 had the lowest moon-unit value, vis., 1.4 moon. We waited for the clouds to clear. Our third and forth exposures (600-sec each) had less clouds and did not exceed the sky value limits. Yeeee_hah! The next three exposures, however, had clouds and high sky values. We waited for better conditions. Conditions did not improve though, and satellite images indicated no chance for improvement. 11:00Z We closed. Misc Watcher messages are in Problems Section. There were many windScreen touches in Alt. endNight finished and was happy. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5091 22:30Z 23:03Z 100 O 147.55 155.82 68 ignore 5092 23:09Z 23:14Z 100 O 157.09 158.38 22 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30121, plate -9999 ------- 22:21 30121 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30122, plate 1751 ------- 23:02 30122 0.0 bias 23:13 30123 10.0 flat ----- sequence 30124, plate -9999 ------- 23:25 30124 0.0 bias 23:30 30125 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30126, plate 1751 ------- 23:35 30126 0.0 bias 23:39 30127 10.0 flat 23:41 30128 2.0 arc 23:49 30129 2.2 arc 23:52 30130 2.1 arc ----- sequence 30131, plate 2042 ------- 01:10 30131 10.0 flat 01:12 30132 2.0 arc 01:30 30133 600.1 target 01:33 30134 10.0 flat 01:36 30135 2.0 arc 04:59 30136 1200.2 target 05:02 30137 10.0 flat 05:04 30138 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30139, plate 2069 ------- 05:16 30139 10.0 flat 05:19 30140 2.0 arc 05:48 30141 1200.1 target 06:16 30142 1500.1 target 06:19 30143 10.0 flat 06:22 30144 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30145, plate 2085 ------- 06:36 30145 10.0 flat 06:39 30146 2.0 arc 06:58 30147 900.1 target 07:11 30148 600.1 target 07:26 30149 600.1 target 07:44 30150 600.1 target 07:57 30151 600.1 target 08:10 30152 600.1 target 08:36 30153 10.0 flat 08:39 30154 2.0 arc 09:38 30155 600.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:05Z 2 2042 246.97 -0.0004 49.29 -0.0003 97.56 -0.0041 1.000150 05:26Z 3 2069 -39.07 -0.0003 50.35 0.0005 147.92 -0.0093 1.000080 06:41Z 6 2085 83.45 0.0003 55.61 0.0029 245.17 -0.0098 1.000300 09:29Z 6 2085 -23.20 0.0003 79.56 0.0029 158.81 -0.0098 1.000280 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL 8242 Stays: JL 8243 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:05Z 2 2042 1.00015 -1481 7 50 247 49.3 3.5 21 232 gdr 1.2 05:26Z 3 2069 1.00008 -790 475 -50 -39 50.4 3.6 17 233 gdr 1.3 06:42Z 6 2085 1.00030 -2961 -1238 50 83 55.7 3.2 8 218 gdr 1.3 09:29Z 6 2085 1.00028 -2764 -1120 50 -23 79.6 3.4 17 219 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:00Z 42 26 10 207 (SSW) 0 - clouds 22:32Z 45 19 10 190 (S) 0 - 23:04Z 41 17 3 180 (S) 0 - 23:36Z 41 -4 10 178 (S) 0 - 00:21Z 38 7 13 170 (S) 0 - 00:53Z 38 5 13 174 (S) 0 - 01:25Z 36 11 18 169 (S) 0 - clouds 01:56Z 38 4 18 168 (SSE) 0 - 02:29Z 37 8 17 171 (S) 0 - 03:01Z 36 26 24 154 (SSE) 0 - 03:33Z 37 7 17 182 (S) 2 - 04:06Z 36 4 22 198 (SSW) 0 - clouds 04:38Z 37 7 17 227 (SW) 1 - 05:11Z 39 10 21 239 (WSW) 2 - 05:43Z 39 10 12 253 (WSW) 2 - 06:16Z 38 14 12 235 (SW) 4 - 06:48Z 37 15 12 221 (SW) 0 - 07:20Z 38 15 14 207 (SSW) 0 - clouds 07:52Z 38 17 18 214 (SW) 0 - 08:23Z 37 18 14 237 (WSW) 0 - 08:55Z 38 17 15 214 (SW) 1 - 09:28Z 38 16 17 223 (SW) 0 - 10:00Z 37 17 20 223 (SW) 2 - 10:33Z 37 17 15 223 (SW) 0 - clouds 11:06Z 37 17 15 231 (SW) 0 - 11:38Z 37 18 16 220 (SW) 0 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 12:00Z Doors and louvers opened, fans on 01:00Z Enclosure off 11:00Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off Telescope at 121,30,00 with Cart 06 mounted CW at 160lbs LN2 connected and turned on.
