APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday May 12, 2004 (MJD 53138) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Pete Newman Mike Harvanek (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished two spectro plates (1608 and 1460); continued imaging of stripe 23 S from 25.3 <= lambda <= 46.3. Also completed imaging of the requested oblique scan stripe 100 O. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation adjusted. Details in the problems section. Night: ------ 0150Z Rolled back the enclosure to ventilate. Loaded Cart 3 Plate 1608. Stars on gotoField but a large scale change (0.04) was recommended; after the scale change, the guide stars could no longer be located. We noted the large difference between the air temperature and the drilling temperature; the suggested scale change matched the value we calculated. Doing the scale change incrementally seemed to work. Upped exposure time in the third exposure to 1400 s to finish the plate. Finished the plate in 3 exposures. 0337Z Pete noted the approach of fairly thick clouds from our west on the cloud cam along with returns to our SW on the Holloman radar. A third exposure was cautiously started on Cart 3. 0412Z Mounted Cart 1, Plate 1460. We got a warning about low guider flat counts; see problems section for details. Stars (barely!) on gotoField. Finished the plate in 3 exposures. 0536Z Clouds now gone, the sky stabilized photometrically, and we switched to imaging. 0602Z Started a drift on stripe 23 S, to complete the effort begun last night. The start of the ramp was fairly close (within 4 degrees) of the zenith at the beginning of the drift; stars were elliptical and skippy reported the rotator out of spec by about 0.15 deg. Decided to wait ten minutes to let the ramp start position track sufficiently away from the zenith. seeingRun declared the first few frames bad but most are actually acceptable. 0730Z We're confused as to why the rotator error has crept up throughout this run -- an encoder error in the rotator fiducial tables? Do the imager kinematic mounts need to be cleaned and/or lubed? Ended the drift early. 0750Z Started the oblique scan requested in the May science plan. For the given oblique scan coordinates, the rotator velocity maxed out at 100 arcseconds per second. During this run we got repeated instances of the following error type: poolNRGangTrim (2: 2004-05-13 09:04:31Z) The documentation indicates missing gangs for this error -- possible failure of the teamster? The failure only affected photo gangs -- not astrometric gangs -- so we carried on. This error was last seen on MJD 53052. 1000Z Tape problem with id2. See problems section for details. 1055Z Ended the drift on the oblique scan ~22 minutes after start of twilight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4625 23:40Z 23:56Z 100 O -64.77 -60.59 42 ignore 4626 05:48Z 06:01Z 100 O 27.55 30.72 35 bias 4627 06:02Z 06:15Z 23 S 25.41 28.67 36 ignore 4628 06:21Z 07:45Z 23 S 25.26 46.28 150 science High rot errors during this scan 4629 07:53Z 10:56Z 100 O 58.89 104.83 320 calibration ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 4626 Bias run on-telescope, t-bars unlatched Run 4627, 23 S Started while telescope was pointing very near zenith; large rotator errors forced end. At this time, we also noticed that the guider images were not updating properly. Consulted with Craig who suggested that the problem would fix itself momentarily (which it did). This is apparently a known problem involving an NFS error between the guider Mac and host. Then the guider Mac and TCC were out of sync; Pete did a gcam init which initially failed. The problem was traced to the Mac, which we rebooted then followed with a set inst in the TCC. The network timeout to host evidently caused the Mac to become confused. id2 tape problem ---------------- Got the following errors tonight during the oblique scan: TEXTONLY *** WARNING *** dscArch: Shutting down tape ID 0 (TEXTONLY *** WARNING *** dscArch: Shutting down tape ID 0 : 2004-05-13 09:50:55Z ) archUseDrv (drive 2: archUseDrv is 0: 2004-05-13 09:51:25Z) Followed the items in the Troubleshooting Archive Checklist on sdsshost web pages. Specifically, "Handling A Write Error" and "Re-Enabling A Single Failed Drive Following Auto-Recovery". Though the tapes mounted, we could not get the archiver to start writing again. After endDrift was executed on the imaging run, the tapes were removed from crate 1, rebooted the crate, put the tapes back in, issued an "initNight -tapeLoad" then ran endNight. endNight detected the un-archived frames and took care of archiving them to tape.
