APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday September 11, 2004 (MJD 53260) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Howard Brewington Jurek Krzesinski Scot, Dan, Steph - on phone for consultations - THANKS GUYS :))) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Could someone tell us what does this strange watcher (tcc) error mean, please: SecDesMountOutOfRange="FFFTF":: (2004-09-12 02:38:54Z) 291 N Oblique scan done between mu 295, 19 as shown in seeingRun - see details in the log (we had problems with tccmon SEGLong). Actualy we went up to mu 20, but on the last scan degree clouds showed up. Plates: 1687, 1691, 1898 done. saveNominalMigValuesForLog done, and they are good. Criag - is "suspect" the name of the computer or just warning that that machine is not faulty? :) - do we have scripts to run reduction on "suspect" and sn04? Just before sending the night log, fwm server hung up on me (commish). We don't have energy to go through the whole night log to find out if all small corrections we made are here - sorry. Sending as it is. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ===== Removed the engineering camera and mounted cartridge 3 for spectro focus check. Because the enclosure was quite a bit warmer than projected night time temps, no focus adjust was made. The focus was not far from spec and SoS was in the black, so I left well enough alone. The M2 nominal values do not agree with what was reported in the log last night. However, the values taken today agree with last night's log and not the nominal values. It looks like the focus may have been non-zero when snm4l was run? The rest of afternoon checkout went without a hitch. Huzzah. NIGHT: ------ It's not photometric. We decided to go for spectroscopy. If pointing will not be good, then we'll take a full pointing model, otherwise we stick with the small model. 02:00Z First light with spectrographs after M1 was mounted. cart 3 plt 1687. Fk5 star found in bright twilight conditions without a problem (after clearing offsets from last night). Scale change 0.03 had to be applied. Plate done with one additional exposure. 02:45Z cart 5 plt 1691. Stars on slew. 02:50Z We noticed that cloud camera is not working since ~02:30, Criag was asked for help. C. camera is working again. We pushed the last exposure on this plate 20 minutes below expiration time. Plate done. 04:13Z Imager mounted, we are on OBLIQUE scan: scanStripe 291 N -mu 306 (run 4821), after a few frames we found out that we are scanning in a wrong directions (run 4821). We had to go back and start scanStripe 291 N from mu=294, run 4822. Skippy was happy, in spec since the first frame. BUT: PROBLEM: tccmon shows wrong mu! While seeingRun tells us that we are at proper place (mu 294) in the sky since the first frame of run 4822, and scanStripe command output confirms that we started at mu 294 (see problem section) SEGLong in tccmon display is lying. It continues to to show SEGLong 308.7 and up, which seems to be the mu at which we ended our short run 4821 (start at 306). PR against tccmon was filed. ALSO it shows SEGStripe 1089 and after a while 1097, 1098 so it's changing (maybe because we are crossing these stipes while scanning?). ScanStripe tells us that: "scan: requested start outside survey area: 53,-171" 06:30Z We noted tccmon SEGLong: 325. , frame: 210 and found in seeing run that mu is about 325 for that frame. What is going on? At the beginning of the run 4822 frame: 12 got mu 295, which is where it should be, but tccmon SEGLong was ~12 deg ahead (308). Also im> stripeAxisPosition 291 04:27 -startMu 294 mu startEnd 294 360.00 minutes mu delta az delta rot 0 2.9e+02 0.0 0.0 [...] az {276.115 351.1451}} {alt {33.2193 63.60786}} {rot {286.7098 466.4311} shows that at the beginning we started at mu=~290, so the start was good. We are going along the great circle, but which one? How come SEGLong is in agreement with seeingrun now? We hope we are not waisting science time. Could somene check on that and tell us that we've got good data tonight, please? :). Skippy was happy all the time. BTW why the AZ position in fits file headers is different then the one showed by tccmon, when RA is in agreement (in frame 210 Az is 328, tccmon az=-31.7) 07:12Z Now seeing run shows mu greater (about 7 deg ahead) than SEGLong in tccmon. That suggests that seeingRun goes on the other great circle than the telescope/tccmon? The other things we checked were output parametrs displayed by: scanStripe 291 N -mu 306 (at 04:27Z) (current iop) calcStripeParams 291 N -startMu 294 -time 04:30 (current iop) calcStripeParams 291 N -startMu 294 -time 04:30 (iop s1_6_0, SEGUE) ALL were in agreement! So we started the scan in a right place and skippy says we are on a proper stripe. 07:40Z From cloud camera we learned that the sky went over ~8 into nonphotometric region for a about 20 minutes, we inspected the images and found out that that was a bug walking on the sky camera mirror :>. We should have kicked its butt when it was there ;). Around frame 390 skippy reported nuErr over 8". 10:01Z Tccmon started to count SEGLog backwards (I mean the value is decreasing after it reached a maximum). 10:10 Frame 578 seeingRun mu 20. End of the scan (run 4822). nuErr ~10. WARNING: -------- 10:06 Clear before this time, but clouds showed up immediately after that, which might have affected the last 1 deg of the data. Jim, Connie: ------------ After we finished the run, we were very tempted to take imager off the telescope, swap to spectroscopy, then mount the imager again and take bias on the telescope. BUT, because of problems with bias in dewar 1 which happen time to time, we decided against it, fearing that moving imager around might cause awkward change in the bias level. This solution is probably very cautious and hits our efficiency, but do you think it would be safe these days to take off the imager and later mount it back for bias drift on the telescope? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Run 4823 - bias on the telescope. Since it's about 30 minutes till the Moon rise, we went for spectroscopy (also conditions changed to nonphotometric). 10:39Z cart 6 plt 1898 mounted. Stars on go to field. 10:45Z We took flat and arc and ... couldn't get these files reduced - there was no files on host or sos at that time. They appeared magicaly after 20 minutes or so. ??? no idea what happened. But since everything was fine from sop session point of view, we continued observation blindly (without knowing about quality of ff, arc or s/n). There was enough space on the computer and sos_redo was saying that it's running. cron job problems? Anyway ff and arc were in spec.
