APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 14, 2003 (MJD 52988) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (swing) Mike Harvanek Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We had photometric sky then clouds, high wind and not great seeing tonight. We got data on 4 plates, but none of them are done. o Flat tire (right front tire) on lindy cart -- PR filed. o Plate 1489 (merged) got very very low S/N in sp1. Please check if all is well. Inspection of the frames did not indicate anyting bad. We would like to know if all is well, if any or all the science exposures are good ASAP. o Tremonti Plate 1180 Offset5 1200s exposure Offset3 2x1200s exposures were taken. o We got some data on SEGUE plate 1666. r2 S/N is in yellow according to SoS but we believe it actually has more S/N than SoS reports. Please give us feedback on this plate also. o We accumulated good data on science plate (cart 8 plate 1272), but did not finish. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ---------------------- ID3-1 did not properly relabel; I cleaned the drive and replaced the tape. The DA's operation was restored and Watcher was happy. While checking-out the 2.5-Meter, I noticed a low-freq vibration when the az axis came to the end of its slew. Night: ---------------------- With the beautiful sky, we start with imaging. There was a slight cofusion in the Sagittarius Scan instructions (some typos and differences between this month's plan and last month's instructions) which was cleared by a call to Jim Gunn. Scot updated this month's science plan to make sure we got the instructions right. Since we know that iop won't run skippy on this stripe (neither the survey iop nor SEGUE iop can run skippy successfully), we decided to try a trick. We know that when we tell iop that we are on stripe 205 (SEGUE Sagittarius scan), it gets confused since it does not recognize this stripe (which is why we call this stripe "100,O" in iop). We therefore decided to copy the stripe 205 astrometric catalog and call it stripe 100 astrometric catalog. Maybe skippy will then grab this catalog and run happily. FYI, the astrometric catalogus are stored in /p/tycho2/v1_0/ko Run 3219 bias on scope Run 3220 82 S lambda 60 We focused and checked and ran skippy to make sure the rotator is in good position. The sky became nonphotometric and the seeing is bad, but we decided to go to Sagittarius scan to see if our trick works. Run 3221 Sag scan 01:00Z Mike says "I am excited to test this trick." This is a moment to be remembered. skippy failed part way through. BUMMER. The error message is in the PROBLEM section. The skippy did find the right catalog, it looks like from the error message. Since the sky and seeing are not imaging quality, we switch to spectro. We added air to the tires of the lindsy cart since the cart felt really heavy tonight. Could someone check the air pressures in the tires? Plate 3 Plate 1489 merged plate ----------------------------------- Fk5 used to aquire the field. The first science exposure have strange S/N. Sp1 got very low S/N while sp2 got good S/N. There is no moon up yet and we were quite surprised to see these numbers. b1 r1 b2 r2 ------------------- Frame 23807 1.2 0.4 5.0 2.7 900s exposure There was a warning on a "Whopping fiber and "Bad sky residuals" in SoS for r1. Even if we doubled the exposure time, the S/N for r1 will NOT make it to 2. Looking at the S/N numbers above, we think either the whopping fiber or something else is misleading the S/N calculations in SoS. So we decided to keep the 900s integration time. The bias, arc ,flat and science exposures did not indicate any problems in any of the chips. Looking at the apoplotsky figures, the r1 and b1 figure shows non-sky spectra along with the sky spectra. The seeing is getting worse and wander around during the 2nd science exposure. 3.5m reported about 3" and we have about 2.5". The S/N improved during the second exposure, but r1 still did not make it to 2. The second and third exposure S/N got the following : b1 r1 b2 r2 ----------------------- Frame 23808 4.4 1.3 6.0 7.0 Frame 23809 2.1 0.4 6.0 3.0 We used the previous version of SoS to see if it will give different answers, but it did not. Following the SoS instructions, we will file a PR against SoS. We would like a feedback as to why sp1 is getting such low s/n compared to sp2 and if any or all science exposures are good/bad. I will wait to hear from reduction team before entering the plate database if any of the exposures were useful or not. We put in the database that we have S/N^2 of 6 for now. Cart 9 Plate 1180 -------------------- Guide stars on gotoField. The guide stars went behind clouds while setting up. We waited for a while and the guide stars came back. Frame 23812 Offset5 1200s exposure This is the last exposure for offset5 position. We returned to the contral pointing to check the scale etc., efficiency meter showed 28% efficiency. So we waited for a while to see it come back up before we get something more decent. The previous exposure should be checked to make sure the S/N is good. We think it is usable since the guide stars looked fine while we were taking the data. 05:45Z The efficiency went up to ~50% so we resume. Frame 23813 Offset3 1200s exposure Frame 23814 Offset3 1200s exposure We got postCalib following SoS recommendations. When we went back to the field after postCalib, the guide stars were not there. So the S/N of Frame 23814 might not be good. Please check and give us feedback so that we know how many more exposures we need at Offset3 position. The lindy cart's right front tire was flat and Wimpy had a hard time moving it to the telescope to do cartChange or fill air into the tire. Mike came down to help. He successfully pushed the cart to the telescope and we were able to do cartChange and filled the tire with air. Since this was the second time we filled air tonight, the tire should be looked at (PR filed). Cart 6 Plate 1666 SEGUE plate (S/n^2>30) ------------------------------- The FK5 was 15" off (mainly in east). The sky cleared and looks much better now -- nearly photometric. But the seeing is still bad (~2.3"). Similar to Plate 1665 which we observed last dark run, r1's S/N^2 seems to be lower than others in SoS. We believe these two exposures are good judging from how the frames look. Please inform us if they are not. During the last exposure, the watcher cartoon showed that one of the flat field screen was not open. We went downa dn visually checked that all screens were open. THe wind was picking up and we believe the FF screen probably was slightly off the open position making the sensor think it was closed. Cart 8 Plate 1272 Survey Plate ------------------------------- After clearing offset, there were guide stars on gotoField. It is getting windier.. 10:10Z The wind became too strong and we closed. We got four good science exposures before we closed. We did not reopen. endNight rejoiced. We did try to run DIMM tonight, but we got a screen full of error messages at startup and we gave up. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4317 21:18Z 21:26Z 100 O 111.95 113.93 25 ignore 4318 21:49Z 22:05Z 100 O 119.68 123.61 40 ignore 4319 00:49Z 01:05Z 100 O 164.79 168.71 40 bias 4320 01:09Z 01:21Z 82 N 160.68 163.77 35 ignore 4321 01:30Z 01:47Z 100 O 174.98 -180.73 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4320 20 4 40 -7.200 0.128 -5.600 0.131 -0.00251 196 56 4320 22 4 51 -6.800 0.124 -5.500 0.175 -0.00269 196 56 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 23802, plate -9999 ------- 21:19 23802 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23803, plate -9999 ------- 23:29 23803 0.0 bias 00:00 23804 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23805, plate 1489 ------- 02:25 23805 10.0 flat 02:28 23806 2.0 arc 02:47 23807 900.1 target 03:05 23808 900.1 target 03:24 23809 900.1 target ----- sequence 23810, plate 1180 ------- 04:23 23810 10.0 flat 04:25 23811 2.0 arc 04:56 23812 1200.1 target 06:07 23813 1200.1 target 06:33 23814 1200.1 target 06:37 23815 10.0 flat 06:40 23816 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23817, plate 1666 ------- 07:20 23817 10.0 flat 07:22 23818 2.0 arc 07:44 23819 900.1 target 08:08 23820 1200.1 target ----- sequence 23821, plate 1272 ------- 10.3 13.0 1.1 11.6 08:25 23821 10.0 flat 08:28 23822 2.0 arc 08:55 23823 1200.1 target 09:18 23824 1200.1 target 09:41 23825 1200.1 target 10:05 23826 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:31Z 3 1489 -27.11 0.0046 54.15 0.0001 157.40 0.0000 0.999950 04:21Z 9 1180 12.43 0.0041 56.59 0.0006 190.38 0.0108 1.000190 07:28Z 6 1666 242.73 0.0007 57.36 0.0043 87.45 0.0010 1.000140 08:34Z 8 1272 99.24 -0.0001 65.10 0.0011 -97.27 -0.0105 1.000050 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7079 Stays: JL7080 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 23:59Z imager 1.00000 0 -8 0 121 30.0 3.6 8 243 02:31Z 3 1489 0.99995 494 1752 175 -27 54.1 1.6 11 204 gdr 1.8 07:29Z 6 1666 1.00014 -1383 240 225 243 57.3 0.3 26 208 gdr 2.3 08:34Z 8 1272 1.00005 -494 957 225 99 65.1 0.5 24 223 gdr 2.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:08Z 42 14 14 290 (WNW) 29 - 21:39Z 43 17 12 285 (WNW) 11 - 22:12Z 42 16 14 277 (W) 12 - 22:44Z 43 17 9 248 (WSW) 32 - 23:16Z 41 18 6 250 (WSW) 30 - 23:49Z 39 18 8 231 (SW) 34 - 00:19Z 38 17 10 253 (WSW) 21 - 00:49Z 38 17 12 263 (W) 44 - 01:20Z 37 17 17 247 (WSW) 41 - 01:50Z 36 17 15 232 (SW) 45 - 02:21Z 36 17 12 213 (SSW) 65 - 02:52Z 34 18 7 253 (WSW) 47 - 03:22Z 34 18 13 238 (WSW) 55 - 03:53Z 34 18 14 240 (WSW) 55 - 04:23Z 33 18 14 241 (WSW) 51 - 04:54Z 34 18 17 251 (WSW) 47 - 05:25Z 33 19 18 242 (WSW) 40 - 05:56Z 34 18 19 250 (WSW) 74 - 06:28Z 33 18 20 235 (SW) 105 - 06:59Z 32 18 20 205 (SSW) 148 - 07:29Z 32 16 28 215 (SW) 207 - 08:01Z 31 15 30 215 (SW) 233 - 08:33Z 32 16 27 232 (SW) 199 - 09:03Z 31 15 27 218 (SW) 161 - 09:34Z 32 16 26 222 (SW) 159 - 10:06Z 31 16 42 244 (WSW) 258 - 10:39Z 31 16 38 264 (W) 398 - 11:11Z 30 16 28 274 (W) 954 - 11:43Z 29 17 35 268 (W) 1265 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 22:54Z Doors opened, fans on. 00:15Z Enclosure off. 10:10Z Enclosure on.
